* Hospital midwives sometimes see pregnant women who are about to give birth coming in only to find that their contractions slow down dramatically, sometimes to the point where theyâre sent home again. Why? Home is a familiar environment where the womanâs body feels secure and relaxed, whereas hospitals are unfamiliar and so the body involuntarily tenses (or more accurately, the brain signals the body to tense).
â It works the other way too, of course. If you feel yourself too calm and need to rev yourself up, for example for a public speaking appearance, a few short, sharp, quick breaths will get the brain and body primed. Politicians and actors do this the whole time.
